Latest Heritage Amazing Comics Auction™ Internet 14011
Dallas, TX - Heritage’s Amazing Comics Auction™ (ACA) sale #14011 ended Sunday, January 4, with 844 lots offered. 492 bidders placed bids, and 261 of them were successful, for a total sell-through of $62,024.40 for 807 lots (95.61% of lots offered). 5 after-auction lots were purchased by 4 bidders, for a total of $611.25
A few highlights from the 01/04/04 ACA sale are:
Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel, 1962) CGC VG- 3.5 Off-white pages. The big one -- origin and first appearance of Spider-Man. First appearance of Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Stan Lee story, Jack Kirby cover, and Steve Ditko art. Overstreet 2003 VG 4.0 value = $2,526. Realized $1,897.50
Al Avison - Original Cover Art for Witches Tales #9 (Harvey, 1952). In this weird, wild cover, a menacing, heavily-fanged oriental monstrosity holds an unconscious woman over a burning vat, surrounded by Chinese dragons, while a manacled man watches on helplessly. This memorable image of a Chinatown gone wrong is penciled and inked by well-known comic craftsman, Al Avison. The overall art size is 13.75" x 21.5" with a 12.25" x 19" image area. The art is in great condition, with some very slight aging apparent, mostly along the extreme edges. Some of the logo and text are modern replacements. Realized $1,495.00
Al Avison - Original Cover Art for Witches Tales #5 (Harvey, 1951). An old witch tortures her poor captives in the basement and you can feel their pain, in this decadent cover penciled and inked by Al Avison. Twice-up, the art fills the entire sheet of 14.5" x 22" bristol paper. This piece is in great condition, with some very slight aging apparent. The logo and indicia at the top are photocopy replacements of the originals. The type at the bottom is original art. This cover measures 14.5" x 22.5". Realized $1,437.50
Bob Powell - Original Art for Tomb of Terror #5, Complete 7-page story "The Rat Man" (Harvey, 1952). Beautiful story from one of the most prolific artists of the Golden Age. Lots of white-out, but the pages are all in great condition. Realized $1,063.75
Bob Powell - Complete Story Original Art for Tomb of Terror #3 (Harvey, 1952). Four page tale of the supernatural, well-drawn by Bob Powell in the style of the best 1950s horror comics. One of Powell's wildest stories, with an incredible after-death sequence. The pages measure 15" x 22", with an image area of 12" x 18". The pages are in excellent condition, with a pale blue wash indicating where shading should go. Realized $920.00
Robert Crumb - Original Sketches, Treaty of Versailles (1961). A brief text piece on the Treaty of Versailles, as well as multiple sketches fill this two-sided page from one of Crumb earliest sketchbooks. 5.25" x 8.25" excellent condition with light overall aging. Realized $690.00
The Avengers #5 (Marvel, 1964) CGC NM- 9.2 White pages. Hulk appearance. Jack Kirby and Paul Reinman art. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $360. Realized $690.00
Amazing Spider-Man #50 (Marvel, 1967) Condition: VF/NM. First appearance of Kingpin. John Romita, Sr. cover and interior art. Mary Jane, Gwen Stacy, J. Jonah Jameson, and the rest of the usual supporting cast are featured, plus Uncle Ben appears in a flashback. Overstreet 2003 VF/NM 9.0 value = $497; NM 9.4 value = $650. Realized $661.25
Jumbo Comics Bound Volume of #33-44 (Fiction House, 1941-42). Issues #33-44 with great stories and art. Overstreet notes that bondage covers, negligee panels, and torture are common in this series. The hardcover binding shows some wear, but is still holding everything together. The comic book covers within show bright colors and gloss. The pages also show great color, but have heavy oxidation around the outside edges. Overstreet 2003 GD 2.0 value for group = $258; VG 4.0 value for group = $516. Realized $632.50
