Comic Treasures to be Auctioned by Heritage!

October 27, 2006 Comics

DALLAS, TEXAS: "Our final comic auction of 2006 is shaping up to be one of our strongest yet," said Ed Jaster, Vice-President of Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries.

"As 2006 draws to a close, we're very excited about our final auction of the year," said Jaster. "We've pulled out all the stops for this one, and we're proud to present one of our best offerings ever."

"Leading the list is our collection of rare and important comics," Jaster said, "including such landmark books as the Kansas City copy of Batman #1, graded a stunning VF+ 8.5 with off-white pages by CGC, the Larson copy of Marvel Comics #1, CGC-graded VF 8.0 with off-white to white pages, a lovely copy of the hard-to-find Marvel Mystery Comics #2, CGC-graded VF/NM 9.0 with white pages, and the 'holy grail' of Western comics, the Mile High copy of Gene Autry Comics #1, graded an unbelievable NM+ 9.6 with white pages by CGC. Certainly, there's enough here to tempt even the most jaded comics fan."

"We're also very pleased to present the comic book collection of Madison Monk," Jaster said. "Monk, a lifelong resident of Los Angeles, began collecting comics as a boy during the early Silver Age. In fact, he still remembers buying such key issues as Flash #123 and Showcase #34 off the stands, and haunting back-issue stores for copies of Golden Age comics. Condition-conscious from an early age, Monk preserved his treasures lovingly, safe for future generations. One more tidbit about Monk you may find interesting: a long-time fan of DJ Wolfman Jack, Monk became the Wolfman's writer for many years, authoring many of the lines heard in American Graffiti. He's also an actor, having been featured in commercials with such stars as Chevy Chase, Ray Charles, Shaquille O'Neal, and others. His collection includes such important books as Sensation Comics #1, Amazing Fantasy #15, and Amazing Spider-Man #1. There may be bigger collectors in comics than Madison Monk, but certainly none more interesting and colorful!"

"Original art is always an exciting area in our auctions, and this one is no exception," said Jaster. "We have a number of important and rarely-seen items, chief among them a group of two drawings that represent the earliest known Mickey Mouse advertising art by animator Les Clark. These iconic images of Mickey Mouse, instantly recognizable to even the most casual Disney fan, were created in 1929 for use on Mickey's first licensed product, a school writing tablet."

"Also being offered is an original page from Fantastic Four Annual #1, marking a rare collaboration between Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, two of the architects of the Marvel Age of comics. From the story, "The Fantastic Four Meet Spider-Man," this exquisite large art page spotlights the entire fantastic foursome as well as the wallopin' webhead himself. If you invest in just one page of Silver Age art in your lifetime, it would be hard to find a better piece than this!"

"Of course, these few highlights barely scratch the surface of this outstanding auction," Jaster said. "Anyone interested in the finest memorabilia that the world of pop culture has to offer need look no further than our latest auction catalog, jam-packed with one superb piece after another. I urge everyone who has ever thrilled to the adventures of masked men in tights to check out the auction for themselves at www.HA.com."

"This marks the end of our fifth year as the world leader in the field of comic books, original comic art, and related memorabilia," Jaster added. "In that time, we've offered the personal collections of such important figures as Nicolas Cage, Stan Lee, Julius Schwartz, and GI Joe-creator Don Levine. We've sold some of the most important books in the hobby, such as the Pay Copy of Marvel Comics #1, and the Mile High copies of Flash Comics #1 and All-Star Comics #3. We're the proud holders of two Guinness World records and we've brought a number of important collections to the public, including the John McLaughlin Collection, the Davis Crippen 'D Copy' Collection, the White Rose Collection, the Seashore Collection, and many others. And the best part is, that's only the beginning. Just wait until you see what we have planned for 2007 and beyond."
