March Signature Auction Highlights
Our catalogs have gone out in the mail, have you received yours yet? If not, information on how to order is at the bottom of this newsletter. By now, you've heard about the White Rose Timelys, a collection so astounding we simply had to give it its own catalog. The selection of movie posters is so strong this time around they also merited a special, separate catalog. We have a new treat this time too, as this auction features a remarkable selection of original works of art in the Famous American Illustrators catalog. Everything in the sale is online, and in a searchable format as well.

I only have room to list some of the higher profile pieces here, but this sale is packed with affordable gems too. Detective Comics #27 (DC, 1939) CGC FN- 5.5 Off-white pages.
Batman swings into action in his first appearance in a comic book. Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, the Dark Knight has gone on to be one of the most popular and durable superheroes in comics, books, film, and TV. Action #1, Marvel #1, and Detective #27 are arguably the most important and sought-after comics. These books are rarely offered in such solid attractive copies like this FN-, so now's the time to start hinting to the spouse what you'll want for Christmas! There is a chip out at the spine, some flaking along the spine, some rust on the staples, and signs of handling that are all consistent with its grade. According to the CGC census as of this writing, this is the fourth-highest-graded Blue Label copy, with the highest being a VF. CGC notes, "Very minor amount of color touch on cover." Overstreet 2002 FN 6.0 value = $90,000. Est. $80,000-up. Est. 80,000-up. View

Detective Comics #40 (DC, 1940) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
When one thinks of icon books this issue comes immediately to mind. You have the second appearance of Batman and Robin in an action sequence, and the first time Robin is actually placed in peril. The wonderful perspective of Robin's plight is truly palpable as Batman rushes to the rescue and confronts the Joker in his first ever cover appearance. This first appearance and origin of Clayface also contributes to the importance of this true key issue. At the time of this writing, this is the highest graded CGC copy and it certainly shows. The bold and vivid colors jump off the page and let you know that you are looking at something very special indeed. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $8,200. Est. 25,000-up. View

Weird Comics #1 Mile High pedigree (Fox, 1940) CGC VF/NM 9.0 White pages.
Most of these early Fox books are uncommon, and just don't turn up in this grade. Almost never, that is! The second-nicest copy that CGC has seen to date was graded significantly lower than our offering, at "6.5". Lou Fine's bondage cover would be desirable in just about any grade, but this copy is truly one-of-a-kind remarkable. Voodoo Man, Thor, Birdman, Dr. Mortal, and Typhoon begin in this issue. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $5,700. Est. 12,000-up. View

Carmine Infantino - Original Cover Art for Superman #199 (DC, 1967).
We don't throw the word legendary around too often when we talk about comics, but we can safely use it here when describing this incredible cover by Carmine Infantino. There are some covers that stick in your memory for many reasons and here is a great example. This Superman cover is legendary in scope and design, drawn by Infantino, one of the artists who defined the Silver Age of comics. This first race between Superman and the Flash would decide who is the fastest man alive. Not only do you get this historic event captured in all its pencil and inked glory, you get cameo appearances by Batman, Robin, Green Lantern, the Atom, Hawkman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter. Aside from some general aging and slight yellowing at the upper left and middle bottom edges, and some rather extensive use of white-out, this cover is in otherwise great shape; there is a missing word balloon on the right side, with a slight glue stain where it was previously affixed. Signed by Carmine Infantino in purple pencil in the bottom right corner. Overall size is 14" x 21.5" with an image area of 12" x 18.5". No matter what the outcome of this race, you'll be the winner if you own it! Est. 25,000-up. View

Mickey's Nightmare (United Artists, 1932). One Sheet (27" X 41").
This is one of two known copies of this early Mickey Mouse poster. This copy is reportedly in the best condition of the two. This image was featured on the "Disney Poster Book" and is probably one of the finest early Mickey images in existence. In this cartoon Mickey dreams of marrying Minnie and having twenty children. That is where the dream turns to a nightmare. Very Fine on Linen. Est. 75,000-85,000. View

Mystic Comics #1 Allentown pedigree (Timely, 1940) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages.
The awesome Alex Schomburg draws this stupendous bondage cover of the Blue Blaze rescuing a wide-eyed buxom woman from a horde of crusty looking cretins. Note the incredible line detail in Schomburg's nefarious characters. Witness the Blue Blaze bloodily pistol-whipping a green-skinned goon, the amputee goon with a hook, and the astonished expression of the one-eyed red-robbed grey-skinned dude as he tries to shoot the Blue Blaze. This issue is spearheaded with appearances of the Blue Blaze, the Dynamic Man, Flexo the Rubber Robot, Zephyr Jones and other Golden Age wonders. This astounding copy features brilliant hues and nice corners. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $17,500. View

John Romita, Don Heck, and Mike Esposito - Original Title Splash for The Amazing Spider-Man #63 (Marvel, 1968).
Cloaked in shadows and pounded by sheets of rain, the Vulture perches on an outcropping, contemplating the death of a certain meddling Web-Slinger... Ruthless and ravenous, this bird of prey is ready to strike. This vivid image, while skillfully composed to invoke fear and dread, will more likely spawn electric thrills of recognition to a generation of readers for whom there was no greater pleasure on earth than a Lee/Romita Spider-Man comic book. The splash is the product of three talented artists, and while we do not know the exact nature of the Romita/Heck collaboration, we suspect that the main figure of the Vulture was penciled entirely by Romita, with Heck providing the background pencils, while Esposito (utilizing his Mickey Demeo pen-name) tied it all together with his strong, smooth inks. A stunning piece that any True Believer would be proud to own. 10.5" x 16". View

World's Largest Auction of Original American Illustration Art Begins In March
The "Golden Age of American Illustration," from about 1900 to 1960, saw an outpouring of the illustration art that became such a familiar part of life for almost every person in America - art for calendars, magazines, books, pulps, and advertisements of every kind. Illustrators themselves were the first to realize the value of original illustration art, often admiring each other's work so much they would trade with each other these tangible pieces of American history.

HCA is eagerly anticipating the beginning of the world's largest sale of original American Illustration Art paintings and drawings. In March 2003, Heritage Comics Auctions begins its series of auctions, offering over 1,100 originals from Famous American Illustrators, such as: Elvgren, Rockwell, Vargas, Sundblom, Gibson, Flagg, Mozert, Sheldon, Baumhofer, Cornwell, Leyendecker, Petty, Dunn, Georgi, Borack, and hundreds of others.
