Highlights of this Week's Comic Art Include:

Fox Comics Artist March of Crime Fox Comics Artist March of Crime "The Fall Guy" Partial Story Original Art Group of 7 (Fox Feature Syndicate, c. 1950-51)
A fascinating relic of a controversial censor-bait period: "The Fall Guy" stops cold after seven pages -- likely a never-finished story, left hanging upon the discontinuation of publisher Victor S. Fox's three-issue revival of the March of Crime title. (A 1948 March of Crime series had consisted of re-bound omnibus reissues of Fox comics that had gone unsold in their 10-cent editions.) The unbilled artist appears to be attempting a style modeled after that of Johnny Craig, a leading artist with EC Comics' crime-thriller comics of the period. A recurring rubber-stamp imprint (lower margins) designates "March of Crime/Nov." -- the title had no November issue, having ended with the September of 1951 issue. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 18". The pages are lightly toned (darker at margins), and the title logo is a combination of a paste-up and hand-lettering. Painted white art corrections, minor edge wear, smudging throughout. Intact, and as such in Very Good condition.
From the Lars Teglbjaerg Collection.

We've not been able to find this scene in any cartoon with Huey, Dewey, and Louie, so it may be an unused idea. Pete's Dragon Elliott Color Model/Test Cel and Maquette Photo (Walt Disney, 1977) Pete's Dragon Elliott Color Model/Test Cel and Maquette Photo (Walt Disney, 1977)
This is an early development color model/test cel of Elliott the friendly dragon from Walt Disney's 1977 live-action/animated musical feature film Pete's Dragon. Created by Ken Anderson and animated by Don Bluth, Elliott is a big green dragon who is best friends with a young orphan named Pete. In visual arts, a color model/test cel is an animation cel made to ensure correct coloration and determine the paint colors for the characters in various lighting and situations they encounter in the film. Anderson opted to make Elliott look more like an eastern, rather than western, dragon because oriental dragons are usually associated with good. This large image of Elliott is hand-painted on 16 field acetate and presented over a background print. The setup is matted to 20" x 16" with an aperture of 13.5" x 10.5". It's a terrific image measuring 12" x 9.5" – almost consuming the entire cel. Along with the cel is an 8" x 10" black and white photo of an Elliott maquette used by the animator during production. The cel exhibits light wear from production use. Overall condition is Very Good.

The Joke's on Batman as Historic 'Detective' Comic Featuring The Joker's Debut Sells for Record-Setting $324,000
Detective Comics #168 (DC, 1951) CGC NM 9.4 White pages
During the first 90 minutes of Heritage Auctions' Nov. 17-20 Comics & Comic Art Signature® Auction, 66 lots of comic books and comic art realized more than $5.5 million, and an original 1987 Calvin and Hobbes tied the first Flash Gordon for the world's most valuable newspaper strip. Things got only more exciting from there.

By Sunday night, every single one of the four-day event's 1,404 lots sold to the more than 5,500 bidders worldwide who helped bring the auction's total to $18,589,015. And several significant records were set, including one for Detective Comics No. 168 — the comic book that tells the origin story of The Joker, who's clearly having the last laugh.

An issue of Detective Comics No. 168 graded CGC Near-Mint 9.4 realized $324,000 to smash the previous record for the book. This historic book had never before been offered at auction in a grade higher than 9.0.

But the other half of the World's Finest team carried his weight, too, when a copy of Superman No. 1 graded CGC Good- 1.8 sold for $288,000 to more than double the previous high for the grade ($132,000, which was set in November 2018 at Heritage).

There were some Marvel-ous results, too: Early comics collector Biljo White's stunning copy of Spider-Man's debut appearance in Amazing Fantasy No. 15 graded CGC Very Fine+ 8.5 sold for $552,000.

And, of course, the auction's Top Five included a hand-colored Calvin and Hobbes Sunday strip from May 24, 1987, which sold for $480,000 to set a new auction record for Bill Watterson and his beloved creations. That price, from the collection of Watterson's late editor Lee Salem, also tied the record for the most valuable original newspaper strip ever sold at auction.

Graham Ingels (as Ghastly) Haunt of Fear #20 Cover Original Art (EC, 1953)
But bidding wars were a constant throughout the four-day event, especially for horror-themed titles. A CGC Fine- 5.5 copy of 1945's Punch Comics No. 12 sold for $90,000. A CGC Near Mint- 1953's Chamber of Chills, featuring Lee Elias' legendarily terrifying cover image, realized $72,000. And a CGC Very Fine+ copy of 1954's Crime SuspenStories No. 22 scared up $52,800 after the dust settled.

"Bidders couldn't get enough of these ghoulish titles," says Heritage Auctions Vice President Barry Sandoval. "What's especially gratifying is that 37 collectors saw their consignments to this sale top $100,000. And, of course, we were thrilled to see our company's all-time highest prices for a number of artists, including greats like Jim Starlin and Graham Ingels."

Indeed, in addition to Watterson's record-setter, Starlin's original cover for 1974's Marvel Super-Heroes No. 47, featuring the beloved artist's incredible Hulk, sold for $102,000. Ingels' original cover for 1953's Haunt of Fear No. 20 realized even more, fetching $114,000 after a heated bidding war for the work signed by the artist who earned his nickname "Ghastly."

Heritage Auctions Opens Forrest Fenn's Treasure Chest to Collectors

Forrest Fenn's Treasure
This time, at least, the hunt for Forrest Fenn's treasure won't be so challenging. What remains from that famed chest hidden in the Rocky Mountains — for a decade, the stuff of dreams and countless news stories — is now available with the simple click of a button.

On Friday Heritage Auctions opened bidding on Forrest Fenn's Treasure, which closes Dec. 12. The thrill of the chase is prolonged another month as collectors once again vie for 476 gold pieces, coins, jewelry and other items found in the chest that was planted in 2010 by the author, decorated fighter pilot and art dealer. Fenn, a native of Temple, Texas, saw the treasure hunt as a fitting farewell to a life well lived — and, he said, as a way to encourage people "to get off their couches."

Before and even after the chest's discovery in 2020 by Jack Stuef, Fenn's story became a nearly mythic tale that began with a simple poem in his memoir The Thrill of the Chase, which contained nine clues to the chest's whereabouts. It began: "As I have gone alone in there/And with my treasures bold/I can keep my secret where/And hint of riches new and old." Fenn believed that after he hid the treasure in the mountains, more than 300,000 people searched for what he called his "title to the gold."

Hollywood Swinging: In December, Heritage Raises the Curtain on Its Most Star-Studded Epic Entertainment Auction Ever

Margaret Hamilton 'Wicked Witch of the West' Hourglass from The Wizard of Oz (MGM, 1939)
Go ahead — pull back the curtain. When you do, pay plenty of attention to the history waiting behind it.

In Heritage Auctions' Dec. 13 Hollywood & Entertainment Signature® Auction, cinephiles and collectors will find hundreds of costumes, vehicles and props from some of the most momentous and treasured films of all time — and even a Holy Grail. The blockbuster event spans a century of cinema and counts among its myriad highlights iconic offerings from The Wizard of Oz, The Ten Commandments, The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Dr. No, The Prince and the Showgirl, The Shawshank Redemption, Gladiator, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Princess Bride, the original Star Wars trilogy, Avengers: Endgame and Titanic. That is but the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

"I am always excited to announce a new auction, but this one is especially thrilling," says Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena. "It's an epic event, without question, filled with memories and magic from some of our favorite movies — from the wide-screen marvels and musicals that delighted us as children to the modern masterpieces and superhero films and space operas that keep us going back to the big screen."

For proof of this sale's scale, look no further than the two items offered from The Wizard of Oz, which Vanity Fair in 2018 called "officially the most influential film of all time."
