Other highlights of this week's auction include:

Alex Ross Kurt Busiek's Astro City #1
"Samaritan" Pitch Illustration Original Art (Image, 1995)
Astro City is both one of the most loving tributes to comics in
general (and the Silver Age in specific) that has ever come along,
as well as being one of the most innovative and original series
ever published. This gorgeous pure pencil piece was used as one of
the initial pitch pieces to produce the series, which started at
Image Comics in 1995. The graphite illustration was published in
the character gallery of issue #1 in 1995. It is signed by Alex
Ross in the lower section of the 9" x 12" paper. The Samaritan
fills the role of a Superman type character, while being very
original and with his own differences and motives. This piece is in
Excellent condition.

Wiggles the Wonderworm (no, really) attempts to save Giggles from
Prince Beez on this fantastic (and incredibly exact) cover
recreation by the incredible L. B. Cole. Cole is well-remembered
for producing some of the most striking covers during the Golden
Age of comics. This piece is produced in ink and mixed medial on
Bristol board with a matted image area of 7.5" x 10". Signed in the
lower image area, it is glass front framed to 11.5" x 14.25". In
Excellent condition.

Carl Potts Strange Tales V2#9 Cover
Study Preliminary Artwork Original Art (Marvel, 1987)
This study is the "first take" on the cover image for this striking
cover. Although the finished image was slightly different, we are
very fond of this powerful image. Rendered in markers, ink, and
pastels, over graphite on 16.75" x 16.25 paper. It is signed in the
lower right. The paper has a 2" rip in the top edge, other smaller
ones around the edges, some creases, and soiling. Overall in Very
Good condition.

Superman Bradman Birthday Custom #nn (DC, 1988)
Condition: FN-
When it comes to this low-print-run comic it's difficult to
separate rumor from fact, but one thing we know for sure is that DC
completist Ian Levine once told us it was one of the scarcest DC
promotional comics. According to lore, this comic was commissioned
by a well-to-do father as a party favor for his son's bar mitzvah
(i.e. 13th birthday), with a print run of less than 100 or a few
hundred depending on whom you believe. Not only did these kids get
to be drawn into an original Superman story, all-time great Curt
Swan did the art! We've heard that none other than MAD satire ace
Angelo Torres contributed as well, and the likenesses of the kids
certainly look like Torres' work. The only copy (a 9.6) that we are
aware of previously sold for $2,600 and $1,900. Overstreet does
list the comic in its promotional section but does not list a
value.

Kellogg's Pep Pins Complete Set of 86
(Kellogg's, 1945-47)

completing the set became the goal for many a youngster. This set
includes all 86 different designs, including the hard-to-find Felix
the Cat and Phantom pins, mounted on a red field and framed in a
shadow box measuring approximately 11" X 9". In Excellent

MAD Art Department: The
Winner of the Presidential Election Is... |
|
... John F. Kennedy, if you're talking about the 1960
election. And at newsstands, the MAD magazine cover proclaimed "We
were with you all the way, Jack!"
However, if you flipped the magazine over you saw:
The issue was a flip-book so retailers could flip it to use
whichever cover was appropriate.
We mention all of this not to reminisce, but because we're offering
the original art for both covers as one lot in this Friday's
auction! You can take a closer look and bid
here.

Snow White, Blondie, and
More in Movie Poster Auction This Saturday & Sunday |
|
Here are a few lots from this weekend's Vintage Movie Posters
Signature Auction that caught our comics- and cartoon-loving
eye:
 |
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (RKO,
1937)
One Sheet (27" X 41") Style B, Gustaf Tenggren Artwork. A truly
momentous junction in film history, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
may never have left the drawing board if not for the passion,
determination, and sheer stubbornness of Walt Disney. Critics in
the press dubbed his vision as "Disney's Folly," his brother and
business Roy partner derided the venture, and his own wife
attempted to dissuade him numerous times from pursuing the project.
Walt Disney defied them all. His persistence created one of the
most massive genres in the business, a billion dollar industry that
has shaped the world view of children and adults alike for nearly
eighty years. An absolute must-have for Disney fans, the style B
boasts the most beautiful artwork of the three one sheets, with the
whole cast rendered in gorgeous detail and soft pastels by Gustaf
Tenggren. Professional restoration has addressed pinholes in the
background and image area, a misfold in the lower horizontal fold,
a chip in the lower right border, and touchup in the folds. There
are small perpendicular tears in the folds, some of which go into
Snow White's image, as well as a tear in her chest. The white area
at the bottom of the poster below the blue title oval and the white
area with the tagline above the image have both been entirely
replaced. The poster has been fully and expertly restored with the
result being a stunning poster that displays very well and which
will be a highlight for one proud owner. Good/Very Good on
Linen.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (RKO,
R-1950)
Italian 2 - Fogli (39" X 54") Niso Ramponi Artwork. As sweet and
wholesome an image as one could ever want for Disney's first
princess graces this beautiful Italian poster, a deviant direction
of style for illustrator Niso Ramponi, otherwise known as one of
Italy's hottest pin-up and cartoon artists. Known primarily for his
amply-proportioned figures and suggestive strips, Ramponi managed
to make inroads into the post-war movie illustration industry
through the connections of his friend, former cartoonist, and
future filmmaker, Frederico Fellini. Life could have taken a very
different turn for this popular cartoonist early on in his career
when, like most young Italian men in the 1940s, his country
conscripted him into service during WWII. Unwilling to abandon his
escalating career, Ramponi went underground as a freelancer and
began signing his works as "Kremos," a pseudonym inspired by his
friend and business intermediary, Sandro Cremo. This lovely
Heritage first has been restored to address a few chips in the
borders, small tears in the right border, and has applied touchup
to the folds. There was a vertical tear between the upper left
border and title and another tear from the bottom border into the
lower text. The printed date in the lower right corner has been
scratched out. Very Fine- on Linen.

Betty Boop in So Does an Automobile (Paramount,
1939)
One Sheet (27.25" X 41"). Betty Boop is a nurse for sick and
injured automobiles. Of course, these are cartoon automobiles, so
each has a distinct anthropomorphic personality. Betty is both
nurse and mechanic as she restores the all too human cars back to
health. We have never offered this delightful cartoon one sheet
before, as Betty Boop cartoon posters are a rare thing indeed. The
poster displays beautifully, as expert restoration has addressed
pinholes in the corners and a tear in the top left corner. There
has been touchup to the folds. Very Fine- on Linen.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (Universal,
1934)
One Sheet (27.5" X 41"). It's fair to say that without Oswald the
Lucky Rabbit, there would be no Mickey Mouse and no Walt Disney
Company. In 1927, a young Walt Disney created his newest character
for Universal Studios: Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. The character
gained rapid popularity over the next two years, rivaling such
audience favorites as Felix the Cat and Koko the Clown. Budget
disputes between Disney and Universal split the animator from the
studio, with copyright laws forcing him to leave behind his famous
bunny. This led Disney to create several new characters, one of
which became Mickey Mouse, and of course, the rest is history. This
extremely rare stock one sheet from the earliest years of animation
would make a fabulous addition to any collection. Professional
restoration has addressed pinholes in the corners, very minor chips
in the bottom border, tape stains in the borders and folds, and has
applied touchup to the folds. The poster still shows a small nick
in the bottom left corner, rounded corners, faint writing
bleedthrough, and some color fading. Fine on Linen.

Blondie (Columbia, 1938)
Three Sheet (41" X 79"). This fantastic three sheet - offered only
once before - is distinguished by the classic cartoon art of the
Chic Young comic strip which dominates this poster. The live
versions of the characters of Blondie and Dagwood - Penny Singleton
and Arthur Lake - are also featured on this wonderful poster for
the first in the long-running series for Columbia Pictures. This
large format three sheet comes in its two original panels and is in
exceptional condition, with only slight edge and fold wear, small
crossfold separations, mild fold separations with minor chips,
small edge tears, minute stains, and light toning in the borders
and folds. There is a crease along the upper panel's right border
where the poster has been folded back and there is archival tape on
the verso. Posters for the debut title of this series rarely
surface, offering an exceptional opportunity for movie and comic
strip fans alike! Folded, Very Fine-.

Heritage Fall Sports Catalog Auction
is the largest to date with nearly 5,000 lots and estimated to
bring over $12 million
The largest sports
collectibles auction of 2016 is now open for bidding at
Heritage Auctions, and is expected to command well over $10 million
for its nearly 5,000 lots. The sale is anchored by elite examples
of the fabled T206 Honus Wagner
(est. $800,000+) and 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle
rookie (est. $1 million), as well as important player
collections from Gary Carter, Monte Irvin, Larry Brown and other
sports luminaries.
"We've known that this auction was going to be something truly
special since The National in August," said Chris Ivy, Director of
Heritage Sports Collectibles. "That's where we picked up the Wagner
and the Mantle, which should alone account for more than $2 million
on the ledger."
Most experts estimate the surviving population of T206 Wagners at
50 or 60, and the offered example is one of the more attractive
representations of that rare breed. While the Mantle rookie is
considerably more plentiful, the PSA NM-MT+ 8.5 quality
assessment places it in the top dozen of all known entries.
Noteworthy offerings from Session One, Trading Cards —
closing in Extended Bidding format on Thursday, November 17 —
include PSA Mint 9 rookie cards of Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron,
Session Two, Memorabilia, begins with The Gary Carter Collection,
more than 400 lots collected over a period of decades by the 2003
Baseball Hall of Fame inductee. Most noteworthy is the baseball that
recorded the last out of the 1986 World Series, finalizing an
unlikely New York Mets World Championship made possible by Boston
Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner's notorious fielding error in
Game Six. Also on offer will be an array of Carter hardware,
including Silver Sluggers and a Gold Glove, as well
as game worn uniforms, All-Star Game rings, and autographed
material from other sports legends who crossed Carter's path over
the years.
Player collections are a major theme of this event, with Carter's
fellow Baseball Hall of Famers Brooks Robinson and
Monte Irvin supplying
important personal keepsakes, as well as Mort Cooper, Denny McLain,
Larry Brown, Ken Aspromonte and more.
One of the most significant personal collections of Olympic Games
memorabilia will tempt elite collectors of that challenging theme,
as The Harmer Johnson Collection presents an extraordinary array of
medals, badges, torches and more, such as an 1896 Athens Summer
Olympics First Place Silver Medal (est. $100,000+) and a
1908 London Summer
Olympics Gold First Place Medal Presented to Sybil "Queenie"
Newall (est. $20,000+) and what is the oldest item ever sold by
Heritage Auctions Sports: A Circa First Century
A.D. Roman Bronze Olympic Discus (est. $8,000+).
The top lot of Session 2 recalls a far more cerebral form of
competition, however, the chess board upon which
Bobby Fischer claimed a key Cold War victory over Russian
grandmaster Boris Spassky in the 1972 World Chess Championship,
arguably the most famous chess tournament in history.
A wide array of game used uniforms and gear, Championship rings and
trophies, programs and tickets and all manner of sports ephemera
rounds out the session, closing in Extended Bidding format on
Friday, November 18.

Cover of the Week: Shall I compare
Dragon Man to A Summer's Day? |

There are many words you can use to
describe Dragon Man ...
... but only Stan Lee (or Roy Thomas?) found the perfect word:
delightful.
Frankly, what's music to our ears is "near mint plus with white
pages." That's the grade of the copy we're offering, which you can bid on
here.
