Description

Carl Barks "Ancient Persia" Painting Preliminary Drawing Signed Original Art plus Four Color #275 Comic Book (Walt Disney, 1971/Dell, 1950). Donald and the boys are abducted by their Mad Scientist neighbor and are whisked away to the Middle East in search of the ancient secrets of life and death in the classic 1950 comic book story "Donald Duck in Ancient Persia." This full-length story was the inspiration for one of the earliest Carl Barks paintings done after his retirement, and this lot includes his oversized original drawing based on the comic book's cover. This was Barks painting #18-71, but there would be three more paintings based on the image, with Uncle Scrooge replacing the Mad Scientist in the last. This 50+ year-old preliminary art is in graphite over red pencil on onionskin paper measuring approximately 16" x 19.75", and has been signed in ink by the Duck Man, Carl Barks (1901 - 2000) in the lower left. A copy of the original 1950 comic book, worth up to $100 on its own, is included with this highly desirable preliminary drawing. The art is in Good to Very Good condition with some handling and edge wear plus some age-related paper toning.
