One of the best games in the NES library, Super Mario Bros. 2 reimagined the legendary platforming series with new mechanics, which let players pick up and throw objects, pull vegetables from the ground, and choose from four distinct characters--Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Toadstool--each with unique abilities. Adapted from the Japanese game Doki Doki Panic, the sequel introduced such foes as Shy Guys and Birdo, while its dreamlike setting and emphasis on exploration helped cement its reputation as one of the most distinctive and influential entries in the Mario franchise.
