Robert Crumb Draw Me Advertising Parody Excerpted Original Art (Spike & Mike Festival/Annecy Animation Festival, 2016). Last time this striking ink painting made the rounds, it was part of an immense artist-jam canvas (80" x 60") containing drawings and scribblings from numerous contributors - a work-in-progress during 2015-2016, largely compiled incrementally during France's Annecy Animation Festival. Now removed from the full-scale canvas (and stretched onto a rigid framework) to stand as a self-contained work, Crumb's contribution appears as a solo flight of stark genius. The image is a lampoon of an art-school advertisement that appeared in many magazines during the last century. Crumb reinterprets the message in ironic terms, mocking the perceived glamour of a career in art, with a caveat about how one must "knuckle down and really learn to draw!" (The "learn to draw!" message, in the former context of the since-removed full-scale canvas, served as a backlash against the amateurish scrawls surrounding Crumb's section. This extraction necessarily does away with that incidental effect). Crumb's patience was tested severely by the task, given the cumbersome size and the coarse, wrinkled texture of the canvas (the rougher side). He achieved a surprising symmetry with the use of penciled guidelines and a dry-brush technique that causes the grain of the cloth to lend texture to the ink. Crumb has often said that he can "draw on any surface and make it work," and this example bears out such self-confidence in a striking manner. Graphite and ink on cream-colored, un-finished canvas. Measurements, 10.25" x 13.25". Shadowbox-framed to 12" x 15", without glass, for added dimensional effect. Excellent condition.More information about Robert Crumb.
