Description

Kelly Freas Crazy Magazine #5 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1974). One cannot picture Freas without flashing on his parallel careers as a leading science-fiction artist, and a definitive interpreter of MAD Magazine's goofball mascot, Alfred E. Neuman. Freas' span at MAD had lasted into 1962, but he reserved the right to exercise that funny-business streak at whatever opportunity. This timely parody of Michael Crichton's hit SF-gunslinger film Westworld (1973; still in play into 1974) lends a MAD-like vibe to the Marvel studios' MAD-influenced Crazy. The caricature depicts Yul Brynner's robot-gunman character. The figure seen on the chest-plate is Nebbish, Crazy's equivalent of Alfred E. Neuman. Marvel/Atlas Comics had introduced Crazy in 1953 as one of the earliest ripostes to EC Comics' MAD; that version of Crazy yielded seven issues, followed by various revivals in both comic-book and magazine format. Gouache on illustration board. Image area, 15" x 19.5". Accompanied by a photocopy of the cover as published. Very Good condition, with edge/corner wear and minimal spot-staining.
