Description
Paul Reinman Journey Into Mystery #87 "I Know the Secret of the Sea-Monster!" Complete 8-Page Story Original Art (Marvel, 1962). Created during Marvel's "Monster Era" of the late 1950s and early 1960s -- when the publisher (then Atlas Comics) filled titles like Tales to Astonish and Journey into Mystery with imaginative science-fiction creatures -- this story exemplifies how Marvel bypassed the Comics Code Authority's monster ban by reimagining its beasts as products of science and space rather than the supernatural. When a mysterious sea monster is sighted in the Atlantic Ocean, the US Navy is dispatched to confront it -- accompanied by a reporter who's swept overboard during the mission. Rescued by the creature itself, the reporter learns a startling truth: the so-called "monster" is actually a lost alien child searching for its parents. After the Navy recovers the reporter, an atomic bomb is dropped on the being, but its fate remains uncertain -- its forgiveness of humanity left hanging in the balance. The story's poignant twist and misunderstood-monster theme echo not one but three classic kaiju films, possibly inspired by the 1961 British film Gorgo, while also foreshadowing modern interpretations like Cloverfield (2008) and the Academy Award-winning Godzilla Minus One (2023). Twice-up scale in ink over graphite on Bristol board with image areas of 12.5" x 18.5". Slight toning, staple/pinholes in the margins, tape adhesive staining on Page 1 and Page 3 from a missing paste-up, production oil staining throughout, whiteout corrections, with light handling wear.
