Description

Fred Guardineer Charles Starrett as the Durango Kid #29 Cover Original Art (Magazine Enterprises, 1954). This long-running title gave actor Starrett as prominent a billing as Roy Rogers and Gene Autry would receive in their respective movie-spinoff comics. Guardineer's dynamic rolling-gunfight scene, here, captures an essence of Starrett's kinetic presence. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 7.5" x 10.75". There is some glue staining in the logotype area, along with editorial marks, toning and handling wear, and marginal adhesive staining; otherwise, the condition is Very Good.

More Information: Football champ Starrett had broken into the movies in 1926 as a gridiron extra -- then detoured into a stage-and-screen career, specializing in frontier adventures and landing the recurring role of Columbia Pictures' mysterious Durango Kid. That assignment would define Starrett's career from the 1940s until the final Durango Kid film in 1952. His comic-book stardom continued for another three years after Starrett had retired from Hollywood.
EDIT: Corrected issue number from #14 to #29.
