Description
Garry Trudeau and Don Carlton Doonesbury Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-6-74 (Universal Press, 1974). The Watergate scandals loom large in this pivotal episode of an influential satire strip. Staff members of the Nixon administration (off-camera) fret about the backlash, while Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworsky (pictured) plays the indictment proceedings like an Oscars ceremony. The piece appeared less than a month before President Nixon would release partial transcriptions of the notorious White House Tapes; his resignation speech was only five months away. Sparely drawn, repetitive artwork, with slight variations in each panel, emphasizes the dark humor. (Note the intermittently flashing beacons on the barricades.) Final panel pasted in place, with variant border. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with Zipatone shading. Image area, 14.5" x 5". Excellent condition.More information about Garry Trudeau.
