Description

Gray Morrow Creepy #9 Splash Page 1 Original Art (Warren, 1966). Ancient Grecian mythology is the narrative springboard for this nightmarish title-page scene from "Dark Kingdom!" Here is a splendid example of Creepy editor Archie Goodwin's method of tailoring his original scripts to emphasize the respective strengths of a hand-picked staff of brilliant artists. Morrow, who had been a latecomer to EC Comics during the pre-censorship 1950s, proved essential to the Warren books' approach to Comics Code-free horrific fantasy. The page contains ink, white watercolor (dry-brush stipple), and chemical shading over graphite on DuoTone board. Mounted to a backing sheet, which contains the vertical title logo. Image area, 10.5" x 15.25". Signed by Morrow at lower right. The face of the book's host, Uncle Creepy (upper left), is a photostatic reproduction of the character's trademarked likeness by fellow artist Jack Davis. A deep expanse of open white space (beneath Uncle Creepy's word-balloon) is intrinsic to the artwork: It was published in precisely this form. Moderate age-toning, with adhesive seams. Very Good condition.
