Description

Robert Stanley The Mark of Zorro Paperback Novel Cover Painting Original Art (Dell, 1951). Zorro was one of the cornerstones of creation for the "masked adventurer" genre. Not the first, but one of the most well-known. This cover was for a 1951 reprinting of his first novel from 1924, which was in turn based on a five-part serialized pulp story from 1919. Note that El Zorro has red hair in this piece. Created edge-to-edge in oil on 9" x 13.5" Bristol board. The reverse side shows it had been affixed to a larger backing piece at some point. In Excellent condition.
From the Roger Hill Collection.
