Steve Ditko Witzend #2 Complete 1-Page Story "Midnight Special" Original Art (Wood, 1967). Here is a rare transitional piece, falling between Ditko's indignant exit from Marvel Comics and his arrival as a star player at DC Comics. The page demonstrates a sense of absurdist humor seldom seen in Ditko's collaborative tales of heroism or weird menace, as well as a quality of whiplash timing that allows for a suspenseful build-up to the visual punchline. Witzend was a creator-owned venture of fellow artist Wally Wood, who sought a precedent for his fellow mavericks to exert a greater control over their creative endeavors -- not so much a commercial breakthrough on its own terms, as a bold step toward the Underground Comix movement that soon would follow. Ink and chemical shading on Duo-Tone board. Dimensions, 13" x 13.5". Toned, with adhesive residue and spot-staining, and in Very Good condition.More information about Steve Ditko.
