Description

Barry Windsor-Smith Marvel Comics Presents #81 Wolverine / Weapon X Splash Page 1 Original Art (Marvel, 1991). "This is a massacre!" Chapter Nine opens with the most powerful image from the "Weapon X" storyline... Weapon X standing on a pile of bodies as soldiers continue to fall around him. The feral mutant lashes out after escaping confinement in the research facility where the clawed Canadian was experimented on, resulting in his skeleton being laced with the unbreakable metal. The origins of Wolverine's Adamantium skeleton are finally being revealed, and it's not a pretty picture.
Windsor-Smith captures the chaos of the scene in heart-stopping detail, a callback to the iconic John Buscema cover of Wolverine #1, which showed Logan in a similar situation. But Windsor-Smith doesn't hold back... illustrating the carnage in progress through a pulse-pounding splash page of blood and fury, as Weapon X tests his newly minted claws on the people seeking to take down the deadly berserker. This image was so impactful, Marvel featured the gruesome scene on the covers of the collected editions Weapon X (1993) and Wolverine: Weapon X [Premiere Edition] (2007).
Ink over graphite and blue pencil on Marvel Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15.25". Slight toning, whiteout touch-ups, with light soiling/staining and handling wear. In Very Good condition.
