Description

Reed Crandall Jungle Jim Tryout Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group (circa 1959). This lot of tryout dailies is numbered two through five. Collector Roger Hill was kind enough to share the following excerpt from his upcoming book on Crandall: "During the summer of 1959, Al [Williamson] suggested to Reed that he might want to start thinking about syndicated newspaper strip work to help fill the void. Doing a Sunday or daily strip could provide a steady income, versus the unpredictable comic book field, which was still suffering through a period of turmoil and unemployment during the late 1950s. Around this time, Williamson got writer Archie Goodwin to write the script for a new Jungle Jim daily strip sequence. This adventure strip, started by Alex Raymond in 1934, had been canceled 20 years later and was now lying dormant with King Features Syndicate in New York. Reed penciled and inked four weeks' worth of daily continuity on the project, but for reasons unknown, it never got off the ground. Reed's capable drawing and ink work on this sequence was highly inspired, and although never accepted or printed by the syndicate, a two-week portion of it saw print in a comic fanzine called The Third Rail, published in June 1981. The other two weeks of original drawings for this sequence were loaned out by Williamson to the same fanzine publisher and to this day have never seen print." Each daily has an image area of 20" x 5.75". The (original) word balloons are attached to overlays, though the first strip has the overlay but no balloons. The overlays are all attached with tape, which has yellowed somewhat, and there's overall paper aging. Good condition. From the Al Williamson Collection.
