Weird Tales #108 December 1932 Frank M. Robinson Pedigree (Popular Fiction) CGC VF+ 8.5 White pages. This is a gorgeous pedigreed copy of one of the most sought-after of all pulps, the first appearance of Conan. This stunner is sharper than most pulps ever get, with the iconic cover uninterrupted and unusually vibrant. Finding a pulp in 8.5 (and with white pages) is much tougher than encountering similarly high-grade Golden Age comics. We recently auctioned a CGC 7.5 for $24,000, going for over $10,000 more than our last sale of a CGC 6.5. We look forward to seeing what this sole highest-graded copy may end at.Conan the Cimmerian makes his first appearance in "The Phoenix on the Sword" by Robert E. Howard, making this one of the most beloved issues of Weird Tales and one of the most influential pulps. Howard repurposed an unsold Kull story "By This Axe I Rule!" turning it into the first appearance of his new hit character. As well, this issue sports a classic bondage cover by J. Allen St. John for "Buccaneers of Venus" by O. A. Kline.
This is one of the first lots to be auctioned off from the Collection of Dr. Richard Meli, with other Frank M. Robinson pedigreed Weird Tales appearing in our upcoming first-ever pulp magazine Signature Auction. CGC notes, "Very minor amount of color touch on cover. From the Collection of Dr. Richard Meli." Bookery's Guide to Pulps Second Edition 2020 VF 8.0 value = $3,750. CGC census 10/25: 1 in 8.5, none higher.
