Description

Norman Saunders Space Cards #26 "Flying Practice" Trading Card Illustration Original Art (Topps, 1957). A gleaming 1950s rocket ship drifts in the cosmic void as three astronauts push off into space with their air-propulsion guns in this vividly painted scene, issued as Trading Card #26 in Topps' ambitious 88-card set charting both real and speculative spaceflight. The work of prolific painter Norman Saunders, a defining image-maker of American pop culture whose brush later gave us the lurid brilliance of Mars Attacks (1962) and the campy fun of the 1966 Batman cards, this classic vision was popular enough to be reissued in 1958 under the new title Target: Moon. Acrylic on Bristol board with an edge-to-edge image area of 4.75" x 3.5". Minor paint chipping and surface abrasions, corner tear, and adhesive residue from detached stat text paste-up, which is included. In Very Good condition.
