Description

Playboy #1 Signed by Hugh Hefner (HMH Publishing, 1953) CGC Qualified VF/NM 9.0 White pages. A gorgeous high-grade copy of the first issue is enhanced by Playboy founder Hugh Hefner's autograph in a white space beside the iconic image of Marilyn Monroe. Pay no attention to the CGC Qualified label, which was assigned merely because "'Hugh Hefner' [is] written on cover in marker." CGC does not authenticate autographs that were not witnessed by the company itself; however, respected autograph authentication expert JSA has reviewed the autograph and certifies its authenticity. Additional provenance comes from the original owner, Doug Tracy of San Diego's Centerfold Shop, who obtained the autograph in a visit to the Playboy Mansion.
This blindingly white copy presents as an even higher grade and has the white pages that collectors prize so much. We last offered a blue label copy of the issue in November, 2016 when the winning bid was $26,290. GPAnalysis.com documents a signed copy in this grade fetching $35,000 in October, 2017. CGC notes just one blue label 9.0 has been certified to date, two in 9.2, and three in 9.4. Even rarer are certified signed copies in 9.0 or higher.
Highlights of the issue include the Marilyn Monroe cover and "Sweetheart of the Month" two-page poster, considered the magazine's first "centerfold", a Big Band feature on Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, "VIP On Sex" by celebrated cartoonists Virgil Partch, and fiction by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Not listed in Overstreet. LOA from JSA. From the Premier Playboy Collection.
