Description
Dan DeCarlo and Joe Edwards Josie #1 Complete Issue Original Art Group of 27 (Archie, 1963). This is one of Archie Comics' big "First Appearance" issues! It was the first appearance for Josie, Melody, Pepper, and the boys who love them. They were created by Dan DeCarlo, and Josie herself is named after DeCarlo's wife, Josie.There is occasional controversy over Josie's first appearance, due to seemingly contradictory dates in the indicia of this issue (February 1963) and her second appearance in Archie's Pals 'n' Gals #23 ("Winter 1962-1963"). Comic books were "on the rack" approximately two months before their indicia date. And according to the U.S. Copyright Office filing, Josie #1 was published on 12-10-1962. Archie's Pals 'n' Gals #23 was published on 12-17-1962... exactly one week later.
The series title changes to She's Josie, and back, before eventually becoming Josie and the Pussycats with Issue #45. This introduced Valerie and the "Pussycat" costumes.
This first issue featured four stories that are really all one long continuing story about the school's physical fitness program. The four sections are titled "A Gym Dandy", "Neat Workers", "Muscle Hustle", and "Track Down". The pages were created twice-up scale in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12" x 17.5". The story title on Story Page 1 is a hand-lettered paste-up.
Also included is an Archie house ad for Archie's Pals 'n' Gals, which has original art, hand-lettering, and stat paste-up logos, as well as the one-page "Li'l Jinx" feature by Joe Edwards.
The pages vary in condition from Very Good to Excellent, with most being in Excellent condition.
