Description
All-Story #94 October 1912 (Frank A. Munsey Company) CGC GD- 1.8 Cream to off-white pages. This is the pulp! This issue features the first appearance of Tarzan in any medium, who remains one of the world's most famous fictional characters. Bookery's notes that this is "the single most valuable pulp magazine", on account of it being "RARE [sic]", and that there are "probably fewer than 20 existing copies". It's virtually unheard of to witness a complete original American release of this pulp without trimming or restoration. The last time we encountered this issue in a similar, unrestored state it blew us away even in FR/GD 1.5, going on to fetch $78,000.Though "Tarzan of the Apes" was only Edgar Rice Burroughs' second published story (after "Under the Moons of Mars" in February of the same year), it resulted in the first published image of Tarzan on the cover of All-Story. Painted by Clinton Pettee, this classic cover depicts our hero in pitched combat, presenting the immense prowess intrinsic to his character as he conquers a full-grown lion. This copy, having an astounding amount of delicate detail, preserves with timeless vibrance the image of Tarzan with one arm wrapped around the lion's throat and the other brandishing a dagger, stunning the observer and depicting a fitting example of the awe Tarzan would go on to inspire for generations.
A cultural sensation from his introduction, Tarzan has spent over a century being adapted into comic strips, radio programs, stage productions, video games, merchandise, and movies. With Tarzan, Burroughs proved the viability of serialized pulp heroes. Without his contributions, John Carter and Tarzan, proving to be successful and sustainable enterprises, there would perhaps be no Doc Savage, the Shadow, Batman, or Superman today.
This is widely considered to be the Action Comics #1 of pulps, so remain vigilant once the bidding begins! Bookery's Guide to Pulps: Revised Third Edition 2025 GD 2.0 value = $75,000. CGC census 1/26: 1 in 1.8, 2 higher.
