Description

The Bullwinkle Show Publicity Color Model Drawing Original Art by Sam Clayberger (Jay Ward, c. 1960s). A cavalcade of all your favorite characters from Jay Ward's hit series The Bullwinkle Show are front and center in this original color model drawing by Sam Clayberger (1926 - 2018). This remarkable one-of-a-kind graphite and colored pencil rendering showcases 15 characters in full figure. Included are Rocky, Bullwinkle, Boris Badenov, Natasha Fatale, Aesop and Son, Gidney and Cloyd (the Moon Men), Captain Peter "Wrong Way" Peachfuzz, Dudley Do-Right; Snidely Whiplash, Nell Fenwick, Horse, and Mr. Peabody and Sherman. The image within the red border measures approximately 8.5" x 5.25" on 12 field animation paper. Outside the border are an array of handwritten color call-outs by Clayberger who, aside from his work as background painter and publicity artist for Jay Ward Productions, also served as color a stylist for the show from 1958 - 1984. The artwork was created as a concept for publicity purposes, and several of these poses were ultimately used for various promotional pieces, and consumer products. This unique hand-drawn composition of the earliest examples of Jay Ward's stable of characters by one of the studio's top artists is practically a collection all its own. The art shows minor handling, edge wear, and mild age-related toning. There are some light stains along the lower left corner and side. Overall condition for this 50+ year-old drawing is Good.
From the Archive of Sam Clayberger and Michael Kadin.
