Description

Bob Oksner The Adventures of Jerry Lewis #97 Story Page 13 Batman Original Art (DC, 1966). One good Bat-turn deserves another: No sooner had comedian Jerry Lewis appeared in a teleseries episode of Batman (April 20, 1966), than DC began plotting to feature Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder, in its long-running Jerry Lewis comic book. (The issue was finished during June-July of 1966, and published in September.) The larger context is significant: ABC-TV's camped-up hokum version of Batman had provoked a mass-media sensation, and crossover appearances were inevitable. Oksner's art straddles the line gracefully between superhero business and goofy humor. The author is Arnold Drake, better known as DC's grimmest superhero writer (Deadman and The Doom Patrol). This closing page also features Witch Kraft, a recurring Jerry Lewis character, and Lewis's fictional bratty nephew, Renfrew. This crossover is unusually complicated in terms of DC's historical continuity, inasmuch as the Batman franchise is a corporate trademark, whereas Jerry Lewis, as a licensed character, is not owned by DC. Renfrew and Witch Kraft are, however, DC-owned figures. DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985) did away with Witch Kraft, but the character was restored in the Dark Crisis serial (2022). The page comprises ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 12" x 11.75". The blank space (below) was reserved for promotional advertising. A cryptic handwritten note appears apropos of nothing in the blank space, mentioning folksingers Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul & Mary. In Excellent condition.
