Description

Robert Prowse Buffalo Bill Library #680 Cover Original Art (Aldine Publ. U.K., 1920s). The fictionalized misadventures of frontiersman Buffalo Bill Cody provided Prowse with long-term employment -- an immense body of work that formed a bridge from the dime-novel format of the 19th century into the pulp-magazine explosion of the 20th century. This example finds Cody in a desperate situation, as usual. There is an element of ethnic stereotyping, typical of the period. A tight edge-trimming at right has removed part of the handwritten caption.
Watercolor/gouache on illustration board, with an image area of 9" x 14". Deeply toned, commensurate with age, with marginal push-pin punctures. Very Good condition.
