Description
L. Franklin Van Zelm The Christian Science Monitor Editorial Comics Panel Original Art (1940s). Japan's Hideki Tojo displays his contempt for international law in this broadside caricature from Van Zelm, longtime opinion cartoonist for The Christian Science Monitor during the 1940s and 1950s. Van Zelm had excelled during the 1920s-1930s as a kid-stuff comics-and-storybooks artist, but he turned downright ferocious as a political cartoonist during the 1940s -- given the provocation of World War II. Ink and Zipatone shading film over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 12". Toned, with one creased corner, a small torn area at lower-center, and handling wear. Very Good condition.More information about L. Franklin Van Zelm. See also: Van Zelm, L. Franklin, L.F. Van Zelm Artist.
