Tom Gill John Wayne Adventure Comics #21 Story Page 1 Original Art (Toby Press, 1953). John Wayne's comic-book adventures not only reflected his Hollywood image, but also anticipated bigger stardom to come. While touring in 1968 to promote an oil-well fireman movie called Hellfighters, Wayne told this to film critic Michael H. Price: "Well, now, y'know, I'd already starred in this story -- as a funnybook hero, I mean, in my own funnybook," he said, referring to the bi-monthly John Wayne Adventure Comics. "'Cept back then," Wayne continued, "the funnybook people, they called the story 'Bloody Oil' and had it over and done with in eight rip-snortin' pages! See, our idea for that comics story came from my admiration for real-life oil-fire busters like Tex Thornton and Red Adair, who also were the inspiration for Hellfighters." That comics story is well represented by the present selection, which depicts Wayne in three panels -- one in asbestos armor modeled after Thornton's firefighting suit, and two in civilian attire. The opening panel, or semi-splash, also provided the art for the issue's cover. Ink over graphite on age-toned Bristol board with an image area of 12" x 18". Edge wear and docked corners. Intact, however, and as such in Very Good condition.
