Description

Bert Whitman George Arliss Inscribed Movie-Star Caricature Original Art (1931). Fawcett Comics artist Whitman also proves his worth as a caricaturist with an angular view of Arliss, the first Englander to win an Oscar (for 1929's Disraeli). A cryptic inscription hails "...the Siamese Twins, 'Zeke and Benk'" -- names that match no known conjoined brothers in show-business history. Some mysteries are more to be appreciated than to be solved. No publishing pedigree is documented; the formally boxed composition suggests a newspaper or magazine appearance. The ink-on-Bristol piece has an image area of 9.5" x 10.5" Severe staining/scuffing and handling wear. Some of the inadvertent staining has blurred with the artist's deliberate ink-wash shading. Intact, however, and as such in Good condition.
