Luke McDonnell and Joe Rubinstein The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe #5 Jack O'Lantern Illustration Original Art (Marvel, 1983). This pumpkin-headed menace had only just burst onto the scene two years earlier in Machine Man #19, but he quickly carved out a reputation as a major headache for heroes like Captain America and Spider-Woman. He's front and center in this illustration from the groundbreaking comic series that cataloged every character in the Marvel Universe. Jason Macendale, a former CIA agent turned mercenary, would go on to claim the mantle of the Hobgoblin after Ned Leeds' death, becoming a staple of Spider-Man's rogues' gallery through the late '80s and early '90s. On the reverse are dynamic pen and marker figure sketches capturing poses and motion studies. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 7" x 12.75". Slight toning with frame shadow over image area, minor foxing, smudging/soiling, minor staining, marginal pinholes, tape along the top edge of the back, corner creasing, and edge/handling wear. Signed by McDonnell and Rubinstein at the bottom. In Very Good condition.Auction Info
