Murray A. Harris Southern Exposure Hitler in Editorial Comics Panel Autographed Original Art (1942). Adolf Hitler's botched plot to invade Spain and capture Gibraltar takes a razzing from emerging editorialist Harris in this semi-professional entry from the earlier stretches of World War II. Harris also refers to France's scuttling of its fleet at Toulon (to prevent a Nazi takeover); and to a decisive routing of Axis forces in North Africa by the British Army, shown as a ripped pants-leg for Hitler. A symbolic depiction of Spain's Francisco Franco as a sword (aimed at Hitler's backside) refers to antagonisms between Spain and Nazi Germany, despite their shared dictatorial values. Harris, a cartooning enthusiast and comics-art collector since childhood, appears to have created this one without editorial supervision. The piece is especially fascinating for its eager overcomplications -- in a field that demands clarity and brevity -- and for its conspicuous misspelling of Gibraltar as Gibralter, a gaffe that no professional editor would have allowed.
