Description
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Rat King with Rats Production Cel and Animation Drawing Group of 167 (Murakami-Wolf-Swenson, c. 1987-96). "I am his royal rodent majesty, the Rat King! And these are my loyal subjects. My simplest wish is their command." The Rat King gives a thorough introduction in this utterly massive lot of original production cel sequences from the 1989 animated debut series of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Featuring characters from Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's increasingly popular comic, the animated series was made considerably lighter-toned than the comic so as to appeal more to children. Appearing in classic episodes such as "Enter the Rat King," "Return of the Fly," Pizza by the Shred," and "Leatherhead Meets the Rat King" to name a few, Rat King is depicted as highly intelligent in an anti-hero role rather than definitively being cast as a villain. He appears, alongside his army of rats, in multiple sequences composed of both production cels and animation drawings, along with a handful of individual cels and drawings including two background layout drawings. The cels have each been skillfully hand-painted on acetate and the drawings rendered in graphite and colored pencils on animation paper. The character image sizes range from petite rats measuring 0.25" x 0.5" to frame-filling closeups of the King himself measuring 9.5" x 7.25" in cel sequences of up to 31 frames! Many of the drawings have adhered to the cels, some drawings show wear from previous adhesion removal. Debris, minor creases, small tears, paint wear/loss, and surface scuffing are present.
