Description

Al Smith Cicero's Cat Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-21-65 (Bell-McClure Syndicate, 1965). Cicero's Cat, a spinoff of the historic comic strip Mutt and Jeff, is a gem in itself, often involving slapstick embarrassments. This cat-vs.-dog entry is representative of Smith's mastery of the wordless gag. The cat obviously owes a visual debt to George Herriman's Krazy Kat. Smith had ghost-drawn Mutt and Jeff since 1932 and finally was granted a byline during the middle 1950s. This selection comprises ink over graphite on moderately toned Bristol board, with an image area of 24" x 9.75". Very Good condition.
From the Steve Sherman Collection.
