Description
Kagaku Bouken E Monogatari Gojira #nn BGS 3.5 Off-White (Shueisha, 1954). This very rare copy of the manga adaptation of the original Godzilla film represents the first full comics-format appearance of the King of the Monsters. Published at roughly the same time the movie debuted, the 122-page story was written by Shigeru Kayama (who provided the original story for the movie) and illustrated by Abe Wasuke (the original designer of Godzilla), it was an omake manga ("extra" or "bonus" manga) in the November 1954 issue of Omoshiro. It closely follows the plot of the movie, depicting the now iconic story of a giant prehistoric monster awakened and mutated by nuclear radiation who wreaks havoc on Tokyo, uniquely capturing Japan's post-war anxieties about nuclear power and the consequences of scientific experimentation. The manga contributed to the popularization of the Godzilla franchise, which has since become a cultural icon that has spawned 38 feature films, more than a dozen comic book titles, several animated TV series, and countless toys, games, and other merchandise.Auction Info
