Description

Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp (Popeye Color Special) Princess Olive's Balcony Production Background (Fleischer Studios, 1939). "Oh dear, what was that?" This 21-minute Color Special cartoon was the longest Popeye short ever produced; it's the third and last of the Popeye Color Special shorts featuring the heroic Sailor Man. This stunning background art is from the scene at about the 14:18 timestamp, as the swooning Princess Olive sashays around the balcony right after Aladdin (Popeye) leaves; she soon stumbles on the magic lamp he left behind. Bill Nolan and Anton Loeb created this mini-masterpiece in gouache on 9.25" x 6.25" Bristol board; our notes say the artboard is trimmed, but the image is complete compared to the film, so only pegholes and borders may have been trimmed off. There are extensive notes with artist names on the backside (it took Nolan and Loeb eight hours) along with the production code X8-1. At first glance, we assumed this was from Gulliver's Travels which was released on 12/18/1939, while Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp came out on 4/7/1939; production on both films was going on at the same time, and Bill Nolan worked on both. The art is matted with an opening of approximately 9" x 7.5" with an overall mat size of 13" x 11.5". The condition is Very Good with minor handling and a pinpoint mark on the right-side wall near the second leaf.
From the Mike Glad Museum Collection.
