Description
Sleeping Beauty Diablo Color Model Cel (Walt Disney, 1959). "My pet...you are my last hope. Circle far and wide...search for a maid of sixteen with hair of sunshine gold and lips as red as the rose." The conniving raven, Diablo, is the most loyal creature to Maleficent as he reflects her inner malice in this hand-painted and hand-inked color model cel. The color model cel is a special animation cel created by the ink and paint department to ensure consistent coloring throughout the entire production. It shows the official color palette for a specific character, prop, or effect and is used by the painters as a guide to prevent colors from clashing with each other or the background. Collectors should keep their eyes on this offering since all 9 of Walt Disney's "Nine Old Men" worked on this animated masterpiece with Disney Legend Marc Davis (1913 - 2000) being responsible for animating Diablo. Diablo was voiced by actor Dal McKennon (1919 - 2009) who has also portrayed a variety of characters in many Woody the Woodpecker cartoons starting in 1952, including a couple animated creatures from the Disney classic Mary Poppins (1964). The cel image can be seen at the 8:37 timestamp as Diablo perches atop Maleficent's staff and is labeled on the bottom border Production Code 2082. The 16 field cel image of Diablo measures at 2.5" x 2.75" which were hand-inked at the Disney Ink and Paint Department in Burbank. The color model cel is displayed over a print background for presentation purposes. The overall condition is Good to Very Good with slight paint chipping on beak, light debris, and light handling wear and edge wear.Auction Info
