Description

Preston Blair Award-Winning "Young Blair" Pair of Originals; Graphite Study on 18" x 24" and Finished Art Pastel on 22" x 29" Heavy Art Paper (1945). Preston Blair's award-winning "Young Blair" tenderly portrays his four-year-old son, Ian, standing in a round bath, pausing to glance over his left shoulder as a large pitcher rests beside the tub. The original pastel, rendered on 22" x 29" heavy art paper and signed by Blair, glows with soft skin tones, pearly highlights, and velvety shadow-hallmarks of a master draftsman translating animation sensibility into fine art. Accompanying the pastel is Blair's signed graphite study on 18" x 24" paper, mapping gesture and proportions with elegant economy. Entered in the 1945 National Print and Drawing Exhibition in Laguna Beach, "Young Blair" won First Place among 370 works by 204 artists-an early affirmation of Blair's stature beyond the studio. A giant of animation (Fantasia, Pinocchio, Bambi, Tex Avery's Red Hot Riding Hood) and influential Walter Foster author, Blair created these works outside Disney, offering a rare personal subject imbued with warmth and design clarity. Includes a contemporaneous Los Angeles Times article about the winning illustration. Vintage artwork exhibits age toning and edge wear; study shows tape in margins. The study has torn corners. Both pieces signed by Preston Blair. In Good condition.
