Description

Ben and Me Benjamin Franklin's Home Interior Master Background Pair (Walt Disney, 1953). "Open up Franklin, we know you're in there!" From Disney's wonderful 1953 short Ben and Me offered here is a fabulous pair of Master backgrounds featuring the interior of Mr. Franklin's home. This 1953 Academy Award nominated featurette adapted Robert Lawson's 1939 novel of the same name, telling the charming story of Amos the mouse who aids Benjamin Franklin in some of his most famous endeavors. The background noted as Sc 32 is spotted first near the 7:49 timestamp as an angry mob pounds on Franklin's front door, while the background marked Sc 44 is seen shortly after near the 8:48 timestamp as Amos inspires the inventor to create his novel stove. Both backgrounds have been hand-painted in gouache with Sc 32 presented on 3-peghole 12 field board and Sc 44 exhibiting a matching image area but presented on 5-peghole 16 field board; both bear the production code 2449 along the lower edge. Backgrounds are credited to Al Dempster, Dick Anthony, and Thelma Witmore (possibly the Mimi whose name appears on both pieces). The backgrounds each bear approval notes from Disney Legends, with Sc 32 ok'd by film director Hamilton "Ham" Luske and Sc 44 ok'd by art director Ken Anderson. With typical handling and edge wear including faint age-related toning and minor surface wear, overall this delightful pair is in Very Good condition.
From the Mike Glad Museum Collection.
