Description

The Picasso Summer Production Cels Group of 2 (Warner Brothers, 1969). This rarely-seen Ray Bradbury-scripted (as "Douglas Spaulding") film, about a married couple's search for artistic inspiration and a desire to meet the famous reclusive artist, includes some mind-blowing animation based on Picasso's works. Images come fast and merge from one to the other, with some juxtaposed with black and white wartime photos. Here are two hand-painted 12 field production cels from this film, which was animated by Wes Herschensohn (who worked for Filmation and Hanna-Barbera during his long career), with assistance from Faith and John Hubley. The first cel shows an impaled horse inspired by Picasso's painting "Guernica", with very Picasso-like hand-inked detail; overall image size is approximately 7.75" x 4.5". The second image is one we couldn't quite find, but there are several sequences that utilize blobs of yellow color that shift and change. It's clearly the outline of a bull and matador, images similar to a number of Picasso paintings. This cel is in a mat with an opening of 10.5" x 8.75"; the mat is mounted onto a backing board measuring 15.25" x 12.5". Very unusual! Condition is Good, with handling wear.
