Description

Walt Disney's Bongo Big Golden Book Double-Page Illustrations by Edgar Starr Original Art Group of 2 (Walt Disney/Simon & Schuster, 1947). Bongo is a trained bear cub who is a big star with the circus, but all he wants to do is be in the wild, in this lovely storybook based on a segment from Fun and Fancy Free. Here are two exceptional double-page illustrations from Disney background artist and art director Edgar Starr (1908 - 1971). Mr. Starr worked on Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Song of the South but got mad about something at the Disney studios and quit; It's been told that Mr. Starr tore up and buried all Disney art in his possession. We're glad he didn't have these! The first painting is from pages 6 and 7 (or 8 and 9 as marked if you count the covers) and shows Bongo juggling seven ordinary household items with riding a unicycle on the tightrope - wow! Down in the ring, a clown performs with three elephants, which is impressive on its own. The gouache on skimmed illustration board has an approximate image size of 14.5" x 9.25". The second double-pager is found with the next page spread, marked 10 and 11 but really 8 and 9, and shows a sad Bongo in his cage, daydreaming about being in the great wide open; the gouache on skimmed illustration board image measures 14.25" x 8.5", with a clipped lower right corner. The overall condition is Very Good with minor handling and edge wear, plus some mild age-related toning of the boards.
