Description
The Lion King "Circle of Life" Rhino Concept Art by Disney Legend Andreas Deja (Walt Disney, 1994). "Circle of Life" was full of beautiful animation as the animals all make their to Simba's presentation at Pride Rock. The 16 field mixed media concept in this lot was created for the rhino at the beginning of the film by Disney Legend Andreas Deja, Scar's supervising animator. He was tasked with creating the animation for the first animal animation in the film, something that was no easy task and was the first bit of character animation audiences would see after the film began. He describes having animated the rhino a few different ways with different perspective and timing, which all led to the final version that appears at about 0:51 as the animal lifts its head surrounded by the orange glow of the rising sun. The concept shows more of the rhino than we see in the final, full figure at about 9.75'' x 8.5'' with a sweet smile on its face. You can even spot a faint rectangle around the animal's head marking how big the shot would be. The lot is a spectacular look behind the scenes and proof of how much thought and consideration went into each shot of the film.
