Eyvind Earle - Sleeping Beauty "Once Upon a Dream" Prince Phillip and Briar Rose Signed Concept Painting (Walt Disney, 1959). "I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream..." Prince Phillip and Briar Rose dance through the forest in this magnificent original concept painting created for the "Once Upon a Dream" song sequence from Walt Disney's timeless masterpiece Sleeping Beauty. Expertly crafted by the hand of Disney Legend inductee Eyvind Earle (1916 - 2000), this piece is rich with detail, featuring the eye-catching bark textures for which Eyvind Earle is widely recognized. This high-detail, high-contrast approach to the design of Sleeping Beauty's environments is a defining feature that distinguishes the film from the rest as an awe-inspiring visual achievement, but the animators at Disney were less enthusiastic at first. Ward Kimball, one of Walt's "Nine Old Men", dismissed it as "a style of over-designing." But Walt paid no attention to the complaints. Page 507 of Taschen's The Walt Disney Film Archives: The Animated Movies 1921-1968 reads, "Earle's designs resonated with [Walt Disney's] vision of a 'moving illustration.' In one meeting, he said, 'For years and years I have been hiring artists like Mary Blair to design the styling of a feature, and by the time the picture is finished, there is hardly a trace of the original styling left. This time Eyvind Earle is styling Sleeping Beauty and that's the way it's going to be!'" Featuring dramatic lighting and Eyvind Earle-signature trees, this stunning piece is hand-painted in gouache on board. Enormous and impressive with an intelligent, limited color palette, this piece is signed by Eyvind Earle in the lower right corner. The painting is presented in a 28.25" x 15.25" Plexiglas frame with a mat window size of 21.25" x 8.5". All frames are sold as-is. Photos are not representative of actual frame condition. Well preserved in the frame, the piece shows minimal handling with a pinhole in the lower right corner, and the condition overall is Very Good.More information about Eyvind Earle.
