Description

"Male Study Portrait" Original Charcoal on 19" x 30" Paper by Peter Ellenshaw's Mentor, Walter Percy Day (c. 1900). Walter Percy Day's "Male Study Portrait" (1900) is a superb early charcoal that showcases the artist's assured draftsmanship and sensitivity to light and form. Executed on paper and signed by Day, the study presents a mustachioed sitter modeled with velvety shadows and crisp highlights-an academic portrait that already hints at the atmospheric finesse that would define Day's later film work. Walter Percy Day (1878-1965) was a pioneering British matte painter and special-effects artist-affectionately known as "Poppa Day"-whose studio contributed to classics including A Tale of Two Cities (1935), The Thief of Bagdad (1940), Oliver Twist (1948), and the celebrated Black Narcissus (1947). Beyond his own achievements, Day nurtured a lineage of screen artists, serving as mentor and stepfather to Disney Legend Peter Ellenshaw, who carried the tradition to international acclaim. Original studio-era artworks by Day are scarce; this drawing offers a rare window onto the classical foundation behind his cinematic illusions. Framed under glass to 26" x 38". Artwork condition is Good, exhibiting expected age toning and handling consistent with its vintage. All frames are sold as-is. Photos are not representative of actual frame condition.
