Description

The Big O Big Fau, Big Duo, and Big O Production Cel Setup with Production Background (Sunrise, 1999). "Big O, It's Showtime!" Created by the character designer Keiichi Sato and the director Kazuyoshi Katayama, The Big O started as a "gimmick for a toy" as stated by Sato, and later added the writer and novelist Chiaki J. Konaka to the team. With a style influenced by Batman: The Animated Series, tokusatsu shows and movies ("special effects" production such as Ultraman and Godzilla), and Film Noir, the series saw an incredible amalgamation of visual influences paired with Konaka's signature writing style previously displayed in Serial Experiments Lain and Digimon Tamers. This gave the series a unique visual style and a thrilling and mysterious storyline tied together with marvelous animation. Seen in a vision by Roger Smith at the 5:54 mark of Episode 13 (the last episode produced with traditional animation), we have the magnificent image of the three Megadeus: Big Fau and Big Duo, with Big O on the front, displaying the three colossal faces reminiscent of earlier mecha designs. The three mechs measure 10.25" x 8" on the hand-painted 12 field size animation cels. The setup is presented on a production background of a sunset, with a color palette that enhances the scene's appeal, rendered in gouache on background board measuring 14" x 10". Also included are three animation drawings of the three Megadeus rendered in graphite with blue and yellow pencils, numbered in the top right corner A13 for Big Fau, B13 for Big Duo, and C13 for Big O, the three created on three sheets of 12 field sized animation paper. This rare setup from the last traditionally animated episode of the show presenting the legendary trio of giant robots is a piece that fans of the show, and fans of mecha anime in general, surely don't want to miss! The setup has the three cels stuck together. They also show staple holes in the top edge of the cel, and there's some very light paint wear on the cels. There is some paint stuck from the production cels on the animation drawings, with A13 also showing some peeling from the animation paper. Presenting very light handling wear from production use, the condition of the lot is Very Good.
