Description

101 Dalmatians Anita with 37 Puppies Production Cel Setup with Key Master Background and Walt Disney Signature by Bob Moore (Walt Disney, 1961). "Let's see, that's 84. And 15 plus 2... One hundred and one!" "A hundred and one? Where did they all come from?" Here's an absolutely extraordinary Key Master setup from Disney's visually striking 1961 masterpiece One Hundred and One Dalmatians that will have you ready to start your own "Dalmatian Plantation" complete with Anita and 37 rollie-poly puppies! Notable for being the Studio's first feature-length film to fully employ xerography in place of hand-inked linework for the character animation, color stylist Walt Peregoy implemented a similar process for the backgrounds by pairing the gouache paintings with linework overlays to cohesively tie in the animation's modern appearance. This incredible and absolutely packed scene can be spotted near the film's heartfelt conclusion just after Roger notes the total number of dogs that have bounded into his living room with the Key Master background and puppies' images first spotted near 1:17:45 timestamp and Anita's pose seen about three seconds later. Full-figured Anita stands at approximately 8" tall while the partial-to-full figured pups span the frame ranging in height from about 0.75" to 2.5" and have all been meticulously trimmed to image and applied to the Key Master background. The background has been hand-painted in gouache on board and exhibits linework transfer from the overlay cel which was removed by the Studio's Art Props Department during the setup's preparation as a VIP gift. Backgrounds on this film were created by Al Dumpster, Ralph Hulett, Anthony Rizzi, and Bill Layne. The setup has been matted to an overall size of 19.75" x 17.75" with an aperture of 14" x 11" and bears the dedication, "To Sue with Best Wishes Walt Disney" on the matboard which is attributed to Disney Legend Bob Moore (1920 - 2001). As Walt Disney's fame grew, a limited number of Studio artists were appointed to handle the flood of autograph requests from fans as well as those required of VIP gifts like this one. A master cartoonist in his own right, Moore was tasked with solo-running the studio's Publicity Art department in 1951, creating innovative promotional art for Disney films and theme parks for three decades and remains the only Disney artist to hold the title "M.D." standing for "Mouse Draw-er". The mat also bears an Original WDP stamp in the lower right and includes the original CoA, both reminiscent of Disney's first foray into animation as fine art with the Courvoisier Galleries approximately two decades earlier. With typical handling and edge wear including slight edge curling/lifting of the trimmed cels, small areas of paint separation/cracking, and minor spots of adhesive residue with some linework restoration by the Art Props department during the setup's preparation, overall this astonishing Key Master setup with signed matboard is in Good to Very Good condition.
