Description

Fantasia "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" Mickey Mouse Mixed-Media Multiplane Concept Painting (Walt Disney, 1940). Mickey Mouse takes on his most famous role as the sorcerer's apprentice, performing unbelievable feats of magic. This lot features an astounding original mixed-media multiplane concept of the mouse created for "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" segment in Disney's Fantasia. The multiplane camera was first conceived by Lotte Reiniger and her husband Carl Koch and continued to be improved by other inventors and animators in the 1930s, namely Ub Iwerks and Bill Garity. It was used in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Fantasia, Pinocchio, and other Disney feature films and changed the game by allowing animators to work on with as many as seven layers of glass at once. The atmospheric concept in this lot was created for a scene in Mickey's dream sequence that would make use of the multiplane camera. A similar scene appears at about 33:48 as Mickey bends the stars and waves to his whims, still wearing his master's magic hat. It measures about 10.5'' x 8'', rendered on paper, and is displayed in a 14.5'' x 11.75'' mat. With light edge and handling wear and faint age-related toning, the lot is in Very Good condition.
