Description

Darrell McClure Little Annie Rooney Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 1-4-36 (King Features Syndicate, 1936). Admirers of Harold Gray's Little Orphan Annie are automatically drawn to Little Annie Rooney, which King Features had launched in 1927 as a competitive response to Gray's Chicago Tribune feature. Beyond the titular resemblance (both strips were named after popular sentimental lyrics of the 19th century), there is a world of difference in style. McClure's mannered realism is as suited to Annie Rooney's plights as Gray's unique cartooning style is to Orphan Annie's ordeals. This example offers a chilling winter scene, with McClure's Annie on the run from an orphanage. Signed at lower right. Ink and blue-crayon shading over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 19" x 4". Moderate toning and handling wear. Very Good condition.
