Description

TRON Clu Ektachrome Continuous-Tone Transparency (Walt Disney, 1982). Presented is a black and white Kodalith (often referred to by collectors as an Ektachrome), from the cult-classic sci-fi film, TRON. Clu, a pirate program created by Kevin Flynn travels inside his game tank on a mission for his user. The interior environment and the costumes closely reflect the brilliant designs of futurist Syd Mead. Along with concepts by Moebius (Jean Giraud), these became the DNA for TRON's unique visual style. Famously, TRON received the Academy Award® for Technical Achievement fourteen years after its initial release. To achieve cutting edge effects seen throughout the film, actors and sets in TRON were initially photographed in black-and-white. This Kodalith was enlarged from 65mm B&W fine-grain film, part of the original stage photography by DP Bruce Logan. Framed enlargements were placed over a light source and re-photographed through colored camera filters. The computers at the time could not do animation, so the frames had to be produced one by one. This transparency measures about 20" x 12". It serves as a visual time capsule, inviting viewers to relive the magic of a pioneering era in science fiction cinema and rediscover the captivating journey of a human traversing the luminous landscapes of the digital frontier. Overall minimal handling wear, and the piece is in Very Good condition.
