Eyvind Earle - Sleeping Beauty Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather in the Throne Room 16.25" x 6.25" Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1959). "Then she can undo this fearful curse?" "Oh, no, sire. Maleficent's powers are far too great." "But she can help." Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather contemplate a counter to Maleficent's wicked curse in this dramatic original concept/color key painting by masterful hand of Disney Legend Eyvind Earle (1916 - 2000) for the 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty. Earle's distinctive Renaissance-inspired style singlehandedly influenced the visual look of this beloved film with its vivid use of color and dreamy atmosphere. Color keys like this are effectively miniature paintings used to explore and establish color palette and theme for a specific scene; this particular concept features cool blue tones which combined with the characters' sullen posture are suggestive of an unfortunate occurrence, amplified by the wealth of remaining golden goblets with no one around to drink from them. It is evocative of both the early scene where Merryweather bestows the final magical gift upon infant Aurora beginning near the 9:57 timestamp as well as the later scenes where the Good Fairies conceal Maleficent's successful curse by placing the entire kingdom under temporary sleeping spell and are seen entering the throne room beginning near the 54:37 timestamp. This fantastic piece has been hand-painted edge-to-edge in gouache with the pensive Fairies seated nicely centered on the 16.25" x 6.25" illustration board and Earle's signature found in the lower right. With typical handling and edge wear including corner pinholes and faint surface wear, overall this finely detailed concept is in Very Good condition.Auction Info
