The Flintstones Fred Flintstone Character Design Drawing by Ed Benedict (Hanna-Barbera, c. 1960). Here's something special for all you Flintstones lovers: an original character design drawing depicting everyone's favorite caveman, Fred Flintstone! This fantastic drawing features Ed Benedict's early design for the character, with bold, sleek lines and exaggerated features. This drawing was created by Ed Benedict (1912 - 2006) to illustrate how his designs should move when animated. A note from Benedict directs animators to create a "minimum of body bend" when Fred leans over. Fred was originally designed wearing a toga, and this drawing shows hints of that early design. The drawing is charming in its own right, but the fact that it was created to develop a character that has become so iconic and popular today makes it even more special. This particular piece was also part of the "Hanna-Barbera: The Architects of Saturday Morning" display at the Normal Rockwell Museum from 2016 to 2017. This piece was also featured in the 1994 book The Flintstones: A Modern Stone Age Phenomenon. The drawing is signed by Ed Benedict. It is numbered in its upper right corner with 8, and it is created with graphite on 12 field animation paper. The piece is in Very Good to Fine condition, with minor handling and edge wear, including minor smudging and age-related toning.Auction Info
