Description

The Flintstones Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble Character Design Drawing by Dick Bickenbach (Hanna-Barbera, c. 1960). Though The Flintstones is now a household name, it wasn't always that way. Hanna-Barbera was taking a bit of a risk with this cartoon, which was their first animated series created with an adult target audience. The venture paid off, with The Flintstones becoming the longest-running and most financially successful cartoon series of all time until The Simpsons took that title at the end of the 1990s. Here is a fantastic original drawing of one of the show's main characters, Fred Flintstone. The drawing depicts some early outfit concepts for Fred and Barney. Barney is even wearing a toga in one of these early concepts! The drawing was created and signed by Dick Bickenbach (1907 - 1994), who was instrumental in the success of Hanna-Barbera's early cartoons, coming to the studio after an already very successful career at MGM and Warner Brothers. He created these images to present to Joe Barbera, who asked Bickenbach to think up some new costume designs for the two cavemen. The drawing was on display at the Norman Rockwell Museum during its "Hanna-Barbera: The Architects of Saturday Morning" display. The piece is rendered with graphite and colored pencil on 12 field animation paper. This wonderful piece of early Flintstones development art is in Very Good condition, with minor handling and edge wear, including minor smudging and age-related toning.
